Introduction To Law

This is a reading/listening/thinking module to enable the student to acquire a general knowledge of Malaysian law. There are 4 major areas of study, which includes the

1. Malaysian Legal System
2. Law of Contract
3. Law of Tort

1.0 CONTRACT LAW

These are the various areas of Contract Law which was being taught :-

2.0 LAWS OF TORT

  • Strict Liability 
  • Trespass to person, land and goods
  • Occupier's Liability
  • Vicarious Liability
  • Defamation 
  • Malicious Falsehood 
Learning Outcome:
In this module, I had learnt the importance about law. In future, as a quantity surveyor, we need to know the law that will not deceived by the other person and can provide a more professional consultation to our customers. In addition, as a Malaysian, we need to have the law knowledge to protect ourselves and have the legal rights towards others.

Furthermore, my thinking and problem solving skills also increased when I was doing my tutorial questions. It has enable me to define and analysis the cases and come out with a relevant law that is based on the acts, common law or case law.

      Measurement 3

      The subject will cover the measurement of for doors, windows, roof trusses, roof finishes, roof drainage, structural steel works and metal works. Introduction on the principle of specification writing, form of specification writing and their uses for the various trades.

      Final Assignment
      This assignment is to develop a depth of subject knowledge on the principles of measurement of various elements and to develop decision – making and management skills related to the quantity surveying profession in the preparation of the Bills of Quantities. This assignment contained 25 marks.

      In this assignment, we will be required to prepare measurement and bill of quantities for doors and windows for a condominium OR small office & home office OR serviced apartment OR residential properties. We are required to visit an existing condominium OR small office & home office OR serviced apartment to collect data and information. We are requested to prepare a report and record the site measurement and dimension. Based on the site measurement and dimension, students need to prepare taking off and bill of quantities for all doors and windows for this condominium OR small office & home office OR serviced apartment OR residential properties.
      This assignment may help students to understand and practice more on the preparation of measurement and bill of quantities. All measurement must be based on the ‘Malaysian Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works –Second Edition (SMM2)

      Learning Outcome
      1. Appreciate the significance of Tender Document preparation and the importance of the ability to work effectively with other within the context of a team.
      2. To develop a depth of subject knowledge on the principles of measurement of various elements.
      3. To develop decision – making and management skills related to the quantity surveying profession in the preparation of the Bills of Quantities.

      Management Science

      This module provides the background, theories, concepts and principles of management. It also explores the various organisational characteristics, structure, behaviour and effectiveness of an organisation. The students are introduced to decision making strategies, analysis tools and motivation concepts hence lead the students to be an efficient and effective management personal.

      Final Assignment
      This assignment is talking about after 10 years of working in the construction industry, you and 4 of your friends want to start up a construction or property development company with RM 3 million as capital. This assignment contained 30 marks.
      There are few tasks need to included in this assignment:
      Task 1: List your Vision and Mission statement. Also include your short term, midterm and long term
      goals. Create an organisation chart and list down the job scope/ responsibilities for each position in
      your company.
      Task 2: Your Company wishes to train and develop 3 management trainees as part of the
      development and succession plan. List the selection criterion, training and development plan.
      Then suggestion at least three (3) interview activities to test if the candidates fit in to the criterion. Also
      include the reasoning behind the activities as reference. i.e.: How are you going to interview the
      interviewee and why do you do so.
      Task 3: Suggest and explain how your company is going to utilise information technology and
      information management skills to create competitive advantages to your company.
      The report should emphasize on the utilization of the theories learnt in lecture or from personal
      reading. Marks will be given to analysis, elaborations and explanations of the theories on the scenario,
      not the elaboration on the theories itself. Additional information can be included in Appendix for
      reference.
      This assignment had 30 marks total.

      Learning Outcome

      4. Formulate their own management potential.

      Building Service 2


      This module introduces students to services that are commonly provided in a building, such as fire protection system, vertical transportation system, mechanical air-conditioning system and electricity generation and supply system. Students are also made familiar with basics requirements, Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL), planning, coordination and installation of these services.

      Final Assignment
      This assignment is required to select a building as a case study project and observe the building services systems taught in this module. This assignment contained 30 marks.


      This assignment need to describe the purpose of the building as a case study. Discuss the existing types of system. Identify the problems, comment on TWO (2) systems; compare and contrast the current system with your recommendation and solution. Justify your finding from Part 3 and recommend the best system for this building.

      Learning Outcome
      In ths assignment,  I was able to put theories that I learnt during lectures and tutorials into practice. I can understand  the principle of the building services  and able to explain it. I also learn that there are different types of services used in different places and have each reason to used it. 


       Morever,this assignment help us to develop and reinforce our thinking and problem solving skills by thinking critically in order for us to overcome each hurdles that we faced while accomplishing the project.When we face the difficult things or problem,we can able to solve it. When we don't know what the information of that building , we try to find out ourselves and search through the internet and library book.


      Communication is the necessity for this assignment because this is a group assignment, we need to
      communicate with other group member and discuss the details and contents of the assignment. It can improve our communicated skills and promote our relationship



      Construction Technology 3

      This module progresses through the stages of dewatering in basement excavation where water table is high above the basement floor level; various types of retaining walls, drainage, roadwork, common industrialized building systems, curtain walls for multi-storey commercial buildings, façade system, prestressing involving pretension andpost-tension method, bridgeconstruction, tensionmembrane roofandsteelrooftrusses.

      Assignment 1
      This assignment is to develop the ability to apply the complete constructional procedures of the various types of building with suitable materials and design. Then, this assignment also can illustrate each stage of the building and design process, with carefully labelled with the relevant technical terms. This assignment contained 10 marks

      Assignment 2

      This assignment stands 20% of the total assessment.  The group assignment is to produce a video project which proves a degree of accomplishment  in each of the requirements identified in the detailed criteria and guidance.

      The components are the introduction is motivating, and hooks the viewer from the beginning.
      Text on project title, name of the five members and location.Camera set-ups eg hand-held, tripod
      Camera movements. Avoid Zooming In and Out Too Much. A variety of transitions are used to assist in communicating the main idea. Subject knowledge is evident throughout the video.All information is clear, appropriate and correct. The text and audio have no grammar or spelling errors.Tape is edited.  Video runs smoothly from shot to shot. Be presented and given a context by a presenter, or will it need to standalone.
      Students will normally work in small project groups of 5 members and each group must ensure that all members are involved in all aspects of the production. The video project is based on any of the construction process that lasts around 20 minutes. Plenty of light will make an incredible difference in the quality of the video footage that you shoot. Shooting outside will give you the best results, but if you’re shooting inside, try to turn on as many lights as possible, and bring them close to your video subject.

      Learning Outcome
      1. Illustrate most aspects of elementary construction with an insight into the techniques applied in largescale
      development using standard steel sections and reinforced concrete.
      2. Apply the methods, materials, equipment and systems used for the construction of tall buildings.
      3. Apply industrial methods which are mainly composed of factory produced components to a module or
      standard increment.
